Day 194

My niece Grace sent me this one today. Thanks Grace, I love it.

Lessons from Seashells

Beach combers
only look for
the rare
the perfect.
Their trained eyes
skim the damp sand
and filter out all the
the common
the broken
for the sake of finding
the gems of the sea.

But…

When you pick up
one of the leftovers,
one of those half-nestled
in the sand
that may have been waiting
there for days
because it is a common little thing
or its other half was lost at sea
and washed up on another beach.

and you feel
the impeccably layered ridges
like steps of a Greek temple

and you inspect
the variations of hues
that fade in and out
across its porcelain belly

you may realize there is
beauty
in the common
and the imperfect.

My day was special.
